Signing a solar contract can sometimes pay more than crops, but farmers have big concerns about taking farmland out of production. Extension agents say that does not always have to be the case.
If you are currently farming that land or renting it to a farmer, putting solar on it typically means that you’re not going to be able to farm it. However, there has been some interest in what we call agrivoltaics, so the idea that we have solar and agriculture together, whether that’s sheep that are grazing under the panels, whether that is based on the panels far enough apart that you may be able to farm strips in between, really, that conversation is up to you,” said Kelly Wilfert.
When it comes to negotiating a contract, it is important to get all questions answered up front and to have a lawyer look over the details.
