Through an animal cruelty investigation, a Florida Sheriff’s Office has discovered that horse slaughters are up across the state.

“We are currently investigating an animal cruelty case that involved a horse being stolen and harvested for meat, from the Sumterville area,” the Sumter County Sheriff’s Department wrote on Facebook last week. “Although this is the only incident in Sumter County, through the investigation we have learned it is on the rise throughout the state.”

Nearby, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office is also investigating the theft and slaughter of a horse that took place earlier in December.

A reward of $13,000 is being offered for information on either of these investigations. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at 352-793-2621 or Crimeline 1-800-423-TIPS (8477).
