USDA working to boost not just food security, but nutritional security

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack is talking about USDA’s new goal for nutrition. Some experts are throwing up their hands saying the U.S. population is nowhere near to consuming the daily recommendations for fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

He says that USDA’s mission is not only to promote agriculture but to make sure everyone in America knows about proper nutrition.

“Support for nutrition throughout all stages of life, connecting Americans to healthy, safe and affordable food sources, developing and translating and enabling a nutrition science through partnerships to get to ordinary individuals and prioritizing the equity,” the Secretary explains.

He says that the four pillars will apply to everything USDA does in the field of nutrition assistance and education. He called obesity and diet-related problems an epidemic.
