Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter have now been married longer than any presidential couple in American history.
As of Oct. 18, the pair has been together 26,765 days, besting the previous record set by George H.W. and Barbara Bush.
The couple went on their first day in 1945 and married one year later when Jimmy was 21 and Rosalynn was 18.
“I thought he was the most handsome young man I had ever seen,” Rosalynn wrote in her memoir.
The pair, however, was almost not married. As Rosalynn details in “First Lady from Plains,” she initially rejected Jimmy because she promised her father she would finish college first.
