Entomologists with the University of Kentucky warn Asian longhorned ticks have been found in the state and pose a threat to pets and livestock.
The insects tend to ingest one host causing stress, reduced growth and severe blood loss. The species was found on a bull showing severe signs of fatigue in Metcalfe County. They have also been reported on wildlife in Martin and Floyd counties in eastern Kentucky.
The Asian longhorned ticks are small and reddish-brown with no distinctive markings. If you find an unusually large number of ticks on pets or livestock, call your veterinarian.
