U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack’s plan to create a carbon bank by the end of the year is getting some criticism from environmentalists.
They doubt the effort would make a big impact compared to the existing conservation programs. Vilsack is also facing pushback from Senate Ag Committee ranking member John Boozman.
He is posing the question of “if USDA has the authority to create the carbon bank, using the Commodity Credit Corporation.”
Andrew Walmsley with the American Farm Bureau says, “USDA believes they have the legal authority. I don’t know if they have the political authority. That’s important.”
