Dakota blizzard runoff could cause flooding downstream

Posted: Updated:

Missouri could be hit with the runoff from the blizzard that hit the Dakota’s last week. According to Brownfield Ag News, if it warms up, the snow will melt and be sent down the Missouri River. Missouri farmers continue to recover from the flooding earlier this year.

Director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture, Chris Chinn, said,

“We’re all praying that we have a light winter so there isn’t going to be a lot of additional snow so that our farmers here in Missouri have that needed break to get their levees built, to get back in their homes and do that clean-up process.”

Should there be more flooding, Chinn says priority will be given areas that have the greatest flood impact.

“Just knowing where those pinch points are, making sure that we deploy the resources that we have at our fingertips to help them so that we are to mitigate any more damage than what they’ve already received.”

North Dakota had as much as two feet of snow in some parts; South Dakota had as much as a foot.
