Two meat packing plants temporarily closed

A collapsed roof forces a Tyson plant to shut down. The Vienna Georgia processing facility is closed today due to a collapsed roof. Meatingplace.com reports the damage came from Saturday storm activity and tornado warnings related to Tropical Storm Nestor. A Tyson supervisor says the company will assess the damage before deciding whether to resume production.

Meanwhile, Cargill plans to resume full operations at its dodge city beef plant this week. Following an explosion on Thursday, the company stopped receiving cattle for slaughter. Cargill did continue to process carcasses it had on hand. The fire was isolated in a stand-alone building, outside the main facility. Two workers were treated for injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
