The U.S. Senate unanimously passed the PACT Act Tuesday which will make animal cruelty a federal offense. The bill now goes to President Trump’s desk.
PACT, which stands for “Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture,” passed in the House last month and adds a new provision to a 2010 law that criminalizes any intentional act of crushing, burning, drowning, suffocating or impaling an animal.
“The PACT Act has now passed out of both the House and Senate and just needs to be signed by the President for the U.S to have a federal anti-cruelty statute,” the Humane Society tweeted. “This is a huge win for animals and it could not have happened without YOUR commitment!”
The bill includes exceptions for hunters.
