An Oklahoma church gave local families a Christmas present they would never forget.

Lawton First Assembly raised $15,000 and partnered with RIP Medical Debt, a nonprofit that allows donors to buy and forgive medical debt for pennies on the dollar, to help wipeout more than $1.6 million worth of debt.

Families across 13 Oklahoma counties will have their debts forgiven and they expected to receive letters with the news in the coming weeks. The church did not reveal how each family was selected.
