Lawmakers from potato states are urging Secretary Tom Vilsack to work on better access to Mexico.
They sent a letter asking USDA to speed up exports and make sure Mexico honors the trade deal with the U.S. It comes after the Department’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service accepted new demands from the Mexican government, which they claim will significantly delay potato exports.
Lawmakers say APHIS needs to explain its decision, especially since the Mexican Supreme Court ruled in favor of U.S. producers, and Mexican ag officials have already made site visits to U.S. potato plants.
