As the crisis in Ukraine worsens and nations produce more biofuels to bring down gas prices, we are hearing more talk about the “food versus fuel” debate.
A recent study shows that arguments may no longer be useful.
Purdue University researchers looked over the numbers, going all the way back to 2004 when the Renewable Fuels Standard went into effect. Researchers say that they used a model that takes into account trade-offs between food versus fuel. They found that the biofuel blending mandate has helped farmers be more efficient, and reduced uncertainty in the markets.
Farmers have also been able to bring fallow land back into production.
