Walmart will close its doors on Thanksgiving in 2020.

In a news release, Walmart CEO John Furner said the decision was made so employees could be at home with their loved ones for the holiday.

“We know this has been a trying year, and our associates have stepped up. We hope they will enjoy a special Thanksgiving Day at home with their loved ones,” said Furner. “We are certainly thankful to our people for all of their efforts.”

The idea, according to Furner, came from Kevin Carlyle, an employee at a store in Texas.

“We know holiday shopping will be different this year, and we will be managing sales events differently,” Furner wrote. “Our best ideas come from our associates, and this year we have decided to close our stores on Thanksgiving Day – November 26.”

In the same news release, it was also announced employees would receive another bonus, bringing the total to $1.1 billion so far in 2020.
