First nasal vaccine for bovine respiratory disease now available

Merck Animal Health released a new vaccine to prevent bovine respiratory disease.

It is the first and only nasal vaccine to protect your herd from pneumonia. Merck says that it stimulates a strong early immune response, to give calves a strong protection against BRD.

The company’s Chief Veterinarian, Dr. Scott Nordstrom, explains the benefits: “Administering intranasal vaccines to neonatal calves is considered one of the most effective strategies in putting protective immunity in place quickly and establishing a strong foundation for future respiratory protection. Nasalgen intranasal vaccines avoid interference from maternal antibodies in colostrum that can block injectable vaccines.”

The vaccine can be given to pregnant cows, nursing calves, and young calves. It has a blue dye to clearly indicate which animals have been vaccinated.
