ALBERTA, Canada (RFD News) — The growing number of AI data centers is raising concerns in rural communities over their power and water demands and the potential impact on local infrastructure.
RealAg Radio host Shaun Haney joined us on Tuesday’s Market Day Report to weigh in on what those concerns could mean for farmers and ranchers.
In his conversation with RFD News, Haney said large data centers could increase utility rates and put pressure on water supplies used for irrigation and livestock. He said many producers believe developers should pay for their own infrastructure rather than passing those costs on to local communities.
Haney also discussed Alberta’s approach of having developers provide their own power, which he said could protect local producers from power spikes and grid failures.
With harvest approaching, soybean producers will continue watching both crop conditions and biofuel policy as they assess the outlook for markets and farm revenue.
