Having received a letter pleading for help from his estranged young son, Jeremiah (Ronnie Scribner), seasoned gambler Brady Hawkes (Kenny Rogers) boards a train from El Paso, Texas to Yuma, Arizona. Along the way, Hawkes strikes up a friendship with Billy Montana, a young card player bound for San Francisco with dreams of striking it rich at an international poker tournament. The two manage to help one another – and others encountered along the journey – out of various difficulties, before facing off with Rufe Bennett (Clu Gulager), the abusive casino owner who holds ruthless sway over young Jeremiah and his mother, Eliza (Christine Belford).
