Minnesota Milk is encouraging dairy farmers in the state to speak up about a draft permit they say could negatively impact manure management.
Lucas Sjostrom, the executive director of Minnesota Milk, said the proposal from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency “really backfired.”
“For the first time, our pollution control agency, who we work with constantly... was trying to totally outlaw two calendar months to spread manure, February and March, and then added cover crops as a requirement for September and October. And here in Minnesota, it’s cold in October and sometimes September. So, we thought that these two proposed regulations really backfired.”
