HPAI confirmed in commercial flock in S. Dakota

HPAI is spreading in the Midwest. It is now confirmed in a commercial mixed-species flock in South Dakota and in a wild goose in Nebraska.

In South Dakota, the affected areas have been quarantined, all of the birds will be culled as a result, and will not enter the food system.

HPAI is now in more than a dozen states, including Iowa. Neighboring Minnesota is on high alert, after losing all of its poultry in the devastating 2015 outbreak. Farmers culled more than 3,000 poultry farms.

A state lawmaker says that the legacy costs of an outbreak to producers can be devastating.
