This month has brought tornadoes to some areas and it is not even officially spring. USDA says some of the blame can be placed on La Nina.
Meteorologist Brad Rippey says the United States is in the second consecutive winter of La Nina and sometimes, but not always, that causes enhanced tornado activity. He says the active pattern is being felt especially in Iowa and now Florida.
“Just early in the month we had this incredible early March tornado outbreak across Iowa. Several dozen tornadoes striking there. We saw unfortunately seven fatalities to those March 5th Iowa tornadoes. More recently, we saw a handful of tornadoes across Florida on the night of March 11th into the morning of March 12th. So, that kind of continues that active pattern.”
Rippey says there will likely be more severe weather this month. Many storms are already lined up across the Pacific that will eventually hit the U.S.
