Egg drop syndrome has been reported on nearly two dozen Indiana farms. The virus causes a decrease in egg production and when eggs are produced, their shells are very thin, or even non-existent.
The disease is not fatal to chickens and poses no threat to humans.
However, it does hurt the market, since those eggs cannot be sold. The Indiana State Board of Animal Health says that producers should report any signs of the disease immediately.
