Wisconsin egg farm composts 2.75 million chickens after HPAI outbreak

An egg farm in Wisconsin is composting millions of chickens after an avian flu outbreak.

USDA confirmed positive cases earlier this month at Cold Spring Egg Farm. They began depopulating the entire stock of layers, and a few days later, they began to compost some. Because the amount is so large, they have had to compost at a second location.

Neighbors are concerned the groundwater will become undrinkable if compost leaks into the water.

Officials say that composting is the most environmentally friendly way to dispose of carcasses.
