Mexico restricts U.S. potatoes

Senators want to lift Mexican restrictions on U.S. potatoes.

The letter to Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue says that U.S. spuds present no phytosanitary risk. Mexican potato farmers insist they do, prevent them from being delivered too deeply into the country.

The letter read, “This limitation greatly reduces opportunities for U.S. potato producers and further limits options for Mexican consumers...”

Senator Mike Crapo celebrated his state’s top cash crop tweeting, “The potato contributes about $4 billion dollars to Idaho’s economy and provides more than 30,000 jobs.”
