Preparing livestock for winter

Winter is around the corner and it is important to prepare livestock for the long, cold months ahead.

Experts say that there are practices to keep in mind so your herd is ready:

  1. Evaluate and balance grazing livestock with available feed. Do this by taking different grazing animal classes and figure out an average weight per class.

  2. Determine what you are doing to feed them. It can be hay, crop residue, stockpile forage, and supplements or a combination of all.

  3. Do an inventory of hay you have on hand and compare the amount of dry matter you will need with how much you have.

  4. Check your winter-feeding pads and double check winter watering tanks.
