A new bill could prevent foreign companies from purchasing ag land in Missouri.
Under current law, foreign interests can own one-percent of the total ag acreage in the state. The bill would have major ramifications for global food companies that operate in Missouri.
The bill’s sponsor, State Senator Dough Beck says, “Our farmland is a finite and precious resource that should not be controlled by foreign interest, as this jeopardizes both our food security and our national security.”
The bill has the support of some local ag groups but opposed by Smithfield Foods and the Missouri Pork Association.
