We have an update now on a constitutional amendment voters in Maine recently passed regarding how they grow food.
The state overwhelmingly passed the “Right To Food” amendment last week. More than 13,000 Mainers grow their own food and raise farm animals. They currently do so without any problems from the state government.
However, a state lawmaker said without protection, that could have changed.
According to Rep. Billy Bob Faulkingham, “All it would take is legislation to make it illegal, whereas, a constitutional amendment would protect the rights that we have now. We want to protect those rights.”
Supporters argued the measure will allow them to grow, produce, and maintain livestock when big businesses threaten ownership of local food supplies. Opponents argue it is vague and poses a threat to animal welfare and food safety.
