The Boy Scouts of America has a long history of empowering the youth to reach for greatness. One Michigan teen accomplished something that less than 1 percent of Scouts ever do.

Ben Hayes became an Eagle Scout at the age of 13, and within a year, he earned all 139 merit badges.

According to his mother, the Scouts changed his life. “No one thought he’d do anything. He’s on the spectrum. Successful level wasn’t there. But merit badges are independence. You do it on your own speed,” she told WZZM1.

Ben’s favorite badge is the “Railroad badge” because of his love of trains and his dream of becoming an engineer one day. The hardest one was swimming.

.5 percent of all Scouts have earned all of the merit badges.
