The full moon is called a snow moon because Native American tribes across Europe used to name months based on attributes they associated with seasons in the Northern Hemisphere. Thus, a full moon in February is called a snow moon because of heavy snowfall that typically happens throughout the month.
This will be the fourth-closest full moon of the year according to EarthSky.
