The morning’s latest U.S. Drought Monitor out of the UNL shows worsening conditions across most of the country.
You can see the red extreme and even exceptional drought that has expanded in various parts of the country.
Little to no rain has been seen in the last week from Texas all the way to the mid-Atlantic coast. Tennessee and the lower Mississippi Valley are currently in a flash drought situation, while further south parts of Florida and Georgia faced thunderstorms that dropped anywhere from two to five inches of rain. Further north, West Virginia is also seeing exceptional drought. 100% of the state’s topsoil and subsoil moisture is rated very short to short. Ohio is also facing extremes.
A more detailed look at Ohio’s map reveals the extent of extreme and exceptional drought in the southeastern portion of the state. USDA is currently working with state entities to learn more from farmers about the impacts they have seen so far.
