Actor Idris Elba has launched the $40 million International Fund for Agricultural Development on Monday to support farmers in poorer nations around the world.
The fund also hopes to raise $200 million for local governments, foundations and the private sector.
“It is about food,” Elba told BBC News. “It is about the basic necessity for human beings, and that will run out if the farmers can’t farm.”
Elba also encouraged the governments of more prosperous nations to provide more aid to farmers to prevent needless hunger and suffering.
“What we’ve learned from Covid is that no man is an island,” he said. “We’re all part of this world, so if we can help each other (with) forward-thinking, that’s going to save a lot of lives and some livelihoods.”
