Aid for Midwest farmers and ranchers affected by recent storm

President Donald Trump has authorized $4 billion dollars in financial aid for Iowans impacted by last week’s storm.

Monday, Trump took to social media for the announcement saying, “Just approved (and fast) the FULL Emergency Declaration for the Great State of Iowa. They got hit hard by record setting winds.”

The Iowa Soybean Association reports that the storm impacted 37.7 million acres of farmland across the Midwest, affecting over 58,000 holders of crop-insurance policies with a liability of around $6 billion dollars.

However, Iowa Farm Service Agency state director Amanda De Jong says that there are several ag department programs available to farmers and ranchers.

“Within FSA we have the Emergency Conservation Program that can help pick up debris. We have programs to help with non-insured crops,” she said. “We do have indemnity programs to help if you had weather related livestock mortality issues.”
