An Arkansas deer hunter was killed in the northern part of the state after he was attacked by a deer he had just shot.

According to KY3, officials said 66-year-old Thomas Alexander shot the buck with a muzzleloader and had several puncture wounds stemming from when he went to check and see if the deer was dead, which it was not.

Alexander died at the hospital and officials say it is unclear if he died because of the wounds he suffered or another cause.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission issued a reminder not to approach a deer that has been shot until it has gone a half hour without moving.

“When you get up there, be really careful around it because it may not be dead,” Game and Fish spokesperson Keith Stephens told KY3. “But if you let them lay there for a while and they don’t move, and he may have done that. We just don’t know.”
