Blue Halloween buckets being used to raise awareness for Autism

A viral post has encouraged people handing out candy on Halloween to “respect the blue bucket,” an indicator that the the trick-or-treater is Autistic or non-verbal.

Omairis Taylor shared a picture of her 3-year-old son’s blue bucket on Facebook. The previous year, her son could not say the words “trick or treat” when going from house-to-house.

“I have made this post public in hopes you will share and get the BLUE BUCKET message out there for Autism Awareness and acceptance this Halloween,” Taylor wrote.

Taylor’s plan to spread awareness has worked so far because the post has been shared more than 122,000 times. Taylor has also received thousands of comments of support, including many from other parents of Autistic or non-verbal children.
