Bubba Wallace, NASCAR’s only black driver, said he was really proud of the organization’s decision to ban the Confederate flag from events.

“I think this is the most crucial time,” Wallace said in an interview on Good Morning America. “Time is of the essence right now in the world that we’re in, in the nation that we’re in, to create change and create unity and come together and really try to be more inclusive.”

NASCAR officially announced the ban Wednesday. The Confederate flag has long been visible on campers and in the stands of NASCAR races.

“That’s a symbol of hate and it brings back so many bad memories,” Wallace said. “There’s no good that comes with that flag, and that’s the message we’re trying to get across.”

The Confederate flag has long been visible on campers and in the stands of racetracks throughout the South. Wallace, who has been outspoken against the flag, called this the “the biggest race of my career.”
