CALGARY, Alberta (RFD NEWS) — Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada continue as an August 19 deadline approaches, with both countries working toward an agreement while addressing tariffs, metals trade and other key issues.

Shaun Haney, host of RealAg Radio, joined us on Thursday’s Market Day Report to discuss where negotiations stand and what the talks could mean for agriculture.

In his interview with RFD News, Haney said Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has indicated Canada is prepared to take a tougher approach if an agreement is not reached before the deadline. He noted that while Canada has ruled out export taxes on products such as oil and potash, other options involving U.S. manufactured goods and some agricultural products remain under consideration.

Haney also discussed ongoing conversations surrounding steel and aluminum quotas, saying the broader negotiations are being approached on a sector-by-sector basis. He noted there are concerns that resolving individual industries separately could reduce Canada’s leverage in future discussions.

Looking ahead, Haney said he remains hopeful the two countries can reach an agreement before the August 19 deadline, although he expects negotiations to continue until the final days. He added that agricultural leaders are watching closely, hoping trade issues can be resolved without disrupting farm markets.
