The brightness from fireflies may not be as common in the future as the insect may face extinction.

Researchers have not yet completed studies to find the total number of fireflies in the United States but groups like Firefly Conservation and Research Group say the number is rapidly declining.

The organization cites loss of natural habitat, pesticides and artificial lighting as some of the issues facing the insects.

Urban lights have become a particularly large issue as the increased number of lights is interfering with chemical patterns in fireflies.
