Corn Harvest Update: The “disaster” an economist is seeing in west Tennessee

This week’s Crop Progress Report is out, with cotton the only one in the green.

Corn is at 57 percent good to excellent, which is down one point from last week. Soybeans lost a point, too, at 58 percent in the top category. Spring wheat remained unchanged at 64 percent good to excellent, while cotton gained three points to 34 percent good to excellent.

Lewis Williamson with HTS Commodities joined us on the Market Day Report and shared what he is seeing in Tennessee.

“Look at the Tennessee corn crop rating 19 percent good to excellent. I can tell you living here in Memphis, I have toured west Tennessee and the corn crop is an actual disaster up there. Insurance adjusters see 20 to 30 bushels per acre in some areas. It is a real problem. Harvest continues, corn harvest continues to move forward, and move northward. We’re seeing corn harvest as far north as Memphis now and my guess is probably some being cut north of Memphis,” said Williamson.

Williamson says if the Delta is indicative of the corn conditions in the rest of the country, then the USDA is still too high on their yield estimates.
