Could Mexico’s corn ban happen? A former trade chief says maybe not

A former trade negotiator says Mexico’s ban on GM corn may never actually happen.

Ken Smith helped negotiate on Mexico’s behalf in the USMCA trade deal. He told a group this week the Mexican government is realizing it painted itself into a corner. Smith said if it were up to Mexico’s trade minister and ag secretary, they would do away with the decree but they face political pressure.

Smith believes Mexico has no intention of banning GM corn before the country’s 2024 election.
