NASHVILLE, Tenn (RFD-TV) Top Republicans tout the 2018 Farm Bill as part of the GOP’s “next big push” into welfare reform. With House speaker Paul Ryan praising the stricter work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue says he thinks most Americans agree with the changes. Changes to SNAP led to a tense mark-up for the bill as it was in committee last week, but House leaders say they hope to bring the bill to the floor for a vote in May...And the typically ‘bipartisan bill’ is unlikely to get support from Democrats.
Senate Ag leaders have repeatedly vowed to take a bi-partisan approach to their Farm Bill, saying the House’s changes to the nutrition title wouldn’t pass in the upper chamber. The Senate Ag Committee could release its draft of the bill next month.
For many farmers, questions about crop insurance and commodities programs are top of mind as the Farm Bill takes shape. Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R, Missouri) addressed those concerns with RFD-TV’s Sarah Mock.
