DOJ challenges merger of U.S. Sugar and Imperial Sugar citing anti-trust laws

The Justice Department is challenging the merger of two sugar companies. They say U.S. Sugar’s acquisition of Imperial Sugar violates anti-trust laws.

The National Confectioners Association supports blocking the merger.

The Department of Justice says that it would put the majority of refined sugar sales in the hands of two producers and would cause prices on food and beverages to skyrocket.

U.S. Sugar countered, saying that it would improve supply chain logistics without harming consumers.
