East and Gulf Coast port workers could walk off the job tonight

In less than 24 hours, shipping at major U.S. ag ports could come to a standstill if the union and dock workers do not soon come to an agreement.

Members of the International Longshoremen’s Association say they will go on strike just after midnight tonight if a new contract is not on the table. The union says this would affect nearly 50,000 workers, and container shipments would feel the largest impact. This all comes as harvest season kicks into high gear.

The U.S. Meat Export Federation warns a strike at East and Gulf ports would cause serious issues for beef, chicken, and pork exports. Shippers have already begun moving products to the West Coast, but say a strike would be catastrophic for the supply chain.
