The number hogs euthanized due to COVID-19 related slowdowns appears to be lower than originally estimated.
According to Iowa State economist Lee Schulz this is all thanks to management practices.
“When we look at the situation as a whole, I think there’s been modest euthanasia, modest culling and really we have to credit the producers and the entire supply chain of acting very quickly in slowing down hogs, adjusting diets, adjusting stocking densities, sorting topping off pens,” he said. “All of those management practices really helped to deal with this situation.”
