Farmers wear many hats and so do teachers. Today, we meet a man who started a successful ag consulting business in the heart of sugarcane country: Calvin Viator
Viator says that he is very fortunate that he was able to do both agriculture and education. He was only 25-years-old when he started teaching Nicholls State University. Most of his students became involved in ag and some even became his clientele.
“Many of them, I am proud to say, became active in agriculture,” he said. “I like to think I had a little bit to do with that. Sometimes I think they were successful despite of me, instead of because of me.”
In the consulting business, he works with a wide array of clients. He says that knowledge of agriculture is just one part of it, the other is understanding people.
“You got to find out what connects with your clients and that’s not always the same,” he adds.
