With a growing effort to bring more voices from the heartland into the foreign policy debate, the University of Nebraska has released a report highlighting farmers’ perceptions of international trade.
Jill O’Donnell, the Director of the Yeutter Institute at UNL said the goal of the report was to figure out what those in the Midwest thought of trade and foreign policy, an area traditionally dominated by the coastal states.
“Two things really stood out to us. First, how unified the Nebraskans that we talked to were on the question of trade policy... almost every single person put the impact of trade policy on the state’s agriculture sector at the top of the list,” O’Donnell said. “All across the state, very constantly the clear message that we heard was the more international trade, the better.”
