Rumors that a Farm Bill might be forthcoming have lawmakers buzzing, but many still have major concerns and doubts with regard to contested aspects of the legislation, including cost, nutrition and crop insurance. Both the Senate and House are working on their own versions of the bill. While an entirely Republican Farm bill could be passed out of the House, leading Senators say they’ll continue working on a bipartisan bill of their own, and that everyone is making sacrifices to ensure the bill gets done on time, especially as trade issues loom.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday evening instructing federal agencies, including USDA, to strengthen current work requirements for welfare programs and to “ensure only eligible persons receive benefits,” which is largely in line with Republican goals for the Farm Bill in the House.
