For the first time since 2007, food insecurity declined across the country and it has now reached a level of 11.1 percent, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.

In rural areas, food insecurity is at 12.7 percent from 15 percent in 2016.

“Despite this progress, work remains to be done, which is why state and county Farm Bureaus across the nation continue to fight hunger in local communities,” the Farm Bureau said.

In a news release, the organization highlighted its initiatives in multiple states.

Georgia - Members raised nearly $23,000 for the Georgia Food Bank Association as part of its Harvest for All campaign.

Illinois - The Harvest for All program had creative ways to address food insecurity. They had a “fill-a-Ford” food drive at a local grocery store and encouraged members to donate crop proceeds, meat and vegetables to mobile food pantries.

Maryland - As part of an outreach program, young farm members packed 5,000 meals for families in need. The meals were donated to the Maryland Food Bank.

Michigan – The Michigan Foundation for Agriculture’s Agent Charitable Fund awarded grants to local food banks. The fund has partnered with the Farm Bureau Family of Companies to provide food to food banks around high-demand holidays.

Minnesota - 68 counties held events which lead to 12,200 pounds of food, 43,000 meals and $33,700 donated to local food shelves.

Montana - A Hunger Raise was held to bring in funds for the Montana Food Bank.

New Hampshire Young Farmer Committee collected and delivered Thanksgiving dinner baskets to families in need for the third year in a row.
