Faurquier County in Virginia is a thoroughbred haven

Known as a haven for thoroughbred horses, one northern Virginia town has a thriving ag industry.

From a livestock production standpoint, cows are No. 1 in Fauquier County, but County Extension Agent Tim Mize is quick to point out the area has a huge horse industry.

“It’s really hard to tease out the numbers and the affect the horse industry has, but it’s big, it’s really big,” he said.

Gregg Ryan, a champion jockey who now raises horses in Fauquier County, says he appreciates the way equine culture fits into the social life of the county.
