The FDA has warned of the presence of methanol, which can be toxic when ingested or absorbed through the skin, in two hand sanitizers produced by Eskbiochem SA.
The two samples were Lavar Gel and CleanCare No Germ. On June 17, the FDA contacted Eskbiochem to recommend the company remove its products from the market due to the methanol poisoning risks, but the company has yet to respond.
The FDA has recommended consumers stay clear of the following hand sanitizers made by the Mexican company:
All-Clean Hand Sanitizer
Esk Biochem Hand Sanitizer
CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer, 75 percent Alcohol
Lavar 70 Gel Hand Sanitizer
The Good Gel Antibacterial Gel Hand Sanitizer
CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer, 80 percent Alcohol
CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer, 75 percent Alcohol
CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer, 80 percent Alcohol
Saniderm Advanced Hand Sanitizer
The FDA says if you have any of these products to dispose of them immediately. High amounts of methanol can cause nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, seizures and more.
“FDA remains vigilant and will continue to take action when quality issues arise with hand sanitizers,” a release said. “Additionally, the agency is concerned with false and misleading claims for hand sanitizers, for example that they can provide prolonged protection such as 24-hours against viruses including COVID-19, since there is no evidence to support these claims.”
