Quarters are getting a makeover in February as the U.S. Federal Reserve will release coins with fruit bats on them, and yes, they will be hanging upside down!
The coins are set to be released on February 3rd and feature a baby Samoan fruit bat - or a “pup"- and its mother hanging upside down. The outer edge of the coin says “NATIONAL PARK” and “AMERICAN SAMOA” along with the year “2020.”
“The design is intended to promote awareness to the species’ threatened status due to habitat loss and commercial hunting. The National Park of American Samoa is the only park in the United States that is home to the Samoan fruit bat,” the U.S. Mint said in a statement.
The new quarters are a part of the Federal Reserve’s “America the Beautiful Program” which was launched in2009 and depicts different national parks or sites. This quarter represents the national park of American Samoa, which is around 2,600 miles southwest of Hawaii.
