Global food prices held steady last month

Global food prices held steady last month, but the FAO Food Price Index shows a lot of give and take.

The September Index was 121.5 points, nearly identical to August. Declines in vegetable oils, dairy, and meat help offset raises in sugar and cereal prices.

The Sugar Index was up nearly 10 percent from August, which is the second consecutive month for an increase. Cereals were up a point, but nearly 15 percent below a year ago.

Vegetable oil prices were down nearly 4 percent, dairy was down 2 percent, and meat fell 1 percent.
