GMO Labeling Finalized by USDA


The USDA finalizes its GMO labeling rule. The legislation is now called the National Bio Engineered Food Disclosure Standard. The standard will cover “foods that contain detectable genetic material that’s been modified through lab techniques and can’t be created through conventional breeding or found in nature.”

According to AgriPulse, the new requirements exempt ingredients such as vegetable oil, sugar, and other foods here the “recombinant DNA” of genetic modification can’t be detected, or if less than 5% was inadvertently included or considered unavoidable. The implementation date is January 1, 2020 with mandatory compliance set for January 1, 2022. The Ag Marketing Service will review the list annually and, if necessary, make updates through the federal rule-making process.
